The Louisiana Action Coalition

 

The Louisiana Action Coalition (LAC) was formed in 2011 and is one of 51 coalitions working nationwide to transform healthcare through nursing. Efforts are driven by the evidence-based recommendations stated in the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) 2010 report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” The IOM report calls for nurses to lead change, and we see this as an opportunity for nurses to work alongside physicians, healthcare providers and other stakeholders to help transform our healthcare delivery system in Louisiana.

Nationally, work of the Campaign for Action falls within three areas: removing barriers to practice and care, advancing education transformation and nursing leadership.

 

The LAC currently is working to help remove scope of practice barriers for APRNS so they may practice to the full extent of their education and training. We believe highly trained, educated nurses are essential to advancement of health care in our state.
Louisiana will soon see hundreds of thousands of additional insured patients seeking primary health care as well as a rapidly increasing number of older adults and people with chronic conditions. We have to find new ways to provide that very basic care and to reach out to our communities.

 

Nurses make up the largest component of the health care workforce in Louisiana. To help ensure the nursing profession is prepared to meet the growing need for nurses at all levels of practice, the LAC is working to develop strategic partnerships to expand educational opportunities for all nurses and actively looking at ways to increase programs that provide seamless progression across all levels of nursing.
