The Lafayette Regional Action Coalition (RAC) includes the following parishes: Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette,
St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion.
The Lafayette RAC received a $1,000 grant from LAC to execute a project aimed at increasing Louisiana’s nursing workforce diversity. The Lafayette group is executing a strategy to increase male students’ awareness and consideration of nursing as a career choice.
In June 2016, students participating in the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Summer Program answered surveys about perceptions of the nursing profession at the start of their two-week curriculum. The same students were surveyed after observing nurses at work in various work setting and attending a presentation about the nursing profession. Results of those surveys will be used to create a presentation that Region IV representatives will give to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academies at David Thibodaux and Carencro Middle Schools.
Partnering with organizations such as AHEC, the Louisiana Organization of Nurse Executives, Health Occupations Students of America, Sigma Theta Tau and the Lafayette Parish School System will allow the project to grow and continue after the grant period ends on December 31, 2016.
Dates and events relating to the grant project include:
August 5, 2016 - Meeting with Lafayette Parish School System Counselors

October 14, 2016 - College and Career Program for students in grades 11 and 12
